Do you need a visa to visit Switzerland?

< 1 min read

Whether you need a visa to visit Switzerland depends on your nationality and the length/purpose of your stay:

1. Short Visits (Tourism, up to 90 days) #

  • Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area, so the Schengen visa rules apply.

  • Visa-exempt countries: Citizens of the EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, and many others do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days.

  • Visa-required countries: Citizens from many African, Asian, and some South American countries need a Schengen visa.

2. Long Stays (Work, Study, Family Reunion) #

  • Visa is required for stays over 90 days.

  • You’ll need a residence permit, which must usually be arranged before arrival.

3. Other Notes #

  • Even if you’re visa-exempt, you must carry:

    • Valid passport or ID

    • Proof of sufficient funds

    • Travel/medical insurance covering the Schengen area

  • Border officers may ask for return tickets or accommodation proof.

💡 Tip: Check the official Swiss government website or the Swiss embassy in your country before traveling, because rules can change depending on international agreements.
