Zürich

Zurich is Switzerland’s largest city and a hub of culture, finance, and innovation. It pairs alpine views with a cosmopolitan edge, where historic churches and winding alleys meet cutting-edge design, world-class galleries, and buzzing nightlife.

Set on the shores of Lake Zurich with the Alps in the distance, it’s a city that’s as scenic as it is efficient. Whether you’re here for the art, the food, the shopping, or just a clean, well-organized escape, Zurich delivers a sharp mix of Swiss precision and urban energy.

The little BIG city

Zurich’s Old Town (Altstadt) is a walkable maze of narrow lanes, boutique shops, and cafés tucked between medieval buildings and centuries-old churches like Grossmünster and Fraumünster.

The Limmat River splits the city in two, offering picture-perfect views and riverside strolls that lead naturally into neighborhoods like Niederdorf, ideal for browsing indie bookstores, grabbing a drink, or people-watching.

For a deeper dive into culture, the Kunsthaus Zurich and the Swiss National Museum showcase everything from classic European masters to avant-garde installations.

But Zurich isn’t just about history and high culture. It’s also a city that knows how to enjoy itself. In summer, locals swim in the lake or lounge at “badis”, open-air riverside baths that double as bars at night.

The food scene is equally lively, with everything from traditional Swiss fare to Michelin-starred innovation and global street food. With clean streets, reliable transport, and a balance of serenity and sophistication, Zurich makes travel feel effortless, and stylish.

Zürich City Guide: What to See, Do, and Know

Zürich is Switzerland’s largest city, its financial centre, and for most international visitors, the arrival point. It is often written off as a business city, which undersells it badly: the Old Town is one of the best preserved in Europe, the lake and river are clean enough to swim in right in the city centre, and the museum and food scenes are excellent. Two days is ideal; three if you want a day trip.

Top Things to See in Zürich

The Old Town (Altstadt)

The Limmat River divides the Old Town in two. On the east bank, the Niederdorf is a lively network of lanes full of bars, small shops, and restaurants. On the west bank, quieter streets climb up to the Lindenhof, a tree-shaded hill on the site of a Roman fort with one of the best views over the river and rooftops. The whole area is walkable in an afternoon.

Grossmünster and Fraumünster

The twin towers of the Grossmünster are Zürich’s landmark. This is where Huldrych Zwingli launched the Swiss Reformation in the 16th century, and you can climb one of the towers for a view over the lake. Across the river, the Fraumünster is famous for its stained glass windows by Marc Chagall, which are at their best on a sunny morning.

Bahnhofstrasse and the Lakefront

Bahnhofstrasse runs from the main station down to the lake and is one of the most expensive shopping streets in the world. Even if you are not buying, walking it down to Bürkliplatz and the lake promenade is the classic Zürich stroll. From there, lake boats run all year, from short round trips to half-day cruises to Rapperswil.

Uetliberg

Zürich’s local mountain is about 20 minutes by S-Bahn from the main station. The summit has a lookout tower with views over the city, the lake, and on clear days the whole Alpine chain. A popular easy hike follows the ridge from Uetliberg to Felsenegg, where a cable car takes you down to Adliswil and the train back to town.

Museums in Zürich

Kunsthaus Zürich is the city’s main art museum and, since its David Chipperfield extension opened in 2021, the largest art museum in Switzerland. Highlights include a strong collection of Alberto Giacometti’s work, the Impressionists, and major temporary exhibitions.

The Swiss National Museum, in a castle-like building right next to the main station, is the best single introduction to Swiss history and culture, and a good rainy-day option.

If you have more time, the FIFA Museum, the Museum Rietberg (non-European art in a lakeside park), and the Lindt Home of Chocolate in nearby Kilchberg are all worthwhile.

Swimming and Summer in Zürich

In summer, Zürich life moves to the water. The city has historic wooden bathhouses on the lake and river, known locally as Badis. Some turn into bars in the evening; the Frauenbad on the Limmat, for example, is reserved for women during the day and opens to everyone as the Barfuss bar at night. The Letten river pool and the lakeside lidos along Utoquai and Mythenquai are other favourites. Water quality is excellent, but follow posted rules and only swim where it is allowed.

Zürich West and the Nightlife

The former industrial district of Zürich West is where the city’s creative side lives. Im Viadukt is a row of shops and a food market built into the arches of a railway viaduct, and Frau Gerolds Garten is a popular summer beer garden in the shadow of the Prime Tower. For nightlife, the Langstrasse area in District 4 has the densest concentration of bars and clubs, while the Niederdorf in the Old Town is more traditional.

Events Worth Planning Around

Sechseläuten, in April, is the spring festival of Zürich’s historic guilds, which ends with the burning of the Böögg, a snowman effigy whose exploding head is said to predict the summer weather. Street Parade, in August, is one of the largest techno parades in the world and fills the lakefront with hundreds of thousands of people. In December, the Christmas markets at the main station and on Sechseläutenplatz are among the best in the country; see our Switzerland Christmas markets guide.

What to Eat in Zürich

The local classic is Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, sliced veal in a cream and mushroom sauce served with rösti. Traditional places such as the Zeughauskeller serve it in large portions in historic rooms. For something sweet, Confiserie Sprüngli on Paradeplatz is famous for its Luxemburgerli, small macaron-style cookies. To keep costs down, look for the lunch menus that most restaurants offer on weekdays.

Getting to and Around Zürich

Zürich Airport is Switzerland’s main international hub, and trains to Zürich HB (the main station) take around 10 to 15 minutes. From Zürich HB, direct trains reach Lucerne in under an hour, Basel and Bern in about an hour, and Geneva in under three hours.

Trams, buses, S-Bahn trains, and even lake boats are all covered by the same ZVV city tickets, and the Zürich Card bundles public transport with museum discounts. If you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, city transport is already included. More in our getting around Switzerland guide.

Where to Stay in Zürich

The Old Town and Niederdorf put you in the middle of everything and within walking distance of the main station. The area around Zürich HB is the most practical for day trips. District 4 and District 5 are livelier and a little less expensive, while Seefeld and Enge are quieter lakeside neighbourhoods. Zürich is expensive at every level, so book early for summer and major events. If you are thinking about a longer stay, see our guide to living in Zürich.

Day Trips from Zürich

Zürich’s rail connections make it an excellent base. Lucerne and its mountains are under an hour away, the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen are an easy half day, and the medieval town of Stein am Rhein, with its painted facades, pairs well with the falls. Rapperswil, at the other end of the lake, makes a relaxed trip by boat.

How Many Days in Zürich?

One day covers the Old Town, the churches, Bahnhofstrasse, and the lakefront. Two days adds a museum, Zürich West, and Uetliberg or a swim. With three days, add a day trip. For the bigger picture, see our Switzerland itineraries.
