You do not need to hike to reach the high mountains in Switzerland. Cable cars, cogwheel railways and funiculars reach summits and viewpoints in an hour or two. Prices, opening dates and weather conditions change, so check current information on the operator’s website before you go.
Popular mountain excursions
- Jungfraujoch: a high-altitude station above Grindelwald and Wengen. Plan a clear day and check the forecast.
- Schilthorn: a summit above Mürren with wide views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
- Titlis: a glacier and rotating cable car above Engelberg, near Lucerne.
- Rigi and Pilatus: two mountains on Lake Lucerne that combine boats, cogwheel railways and cable cars.
- Gornergrat and Matterhorn viewpoints: see the Matterhorn from the railway above Zermatt.
Planning tips
- Go early in the day, when cloud is less likely and crowds are smaller.
- Dress in layers, because the temperature at altitude is far lower than in the valley.
- Check whether your Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card gives a discount.
- Read our mountain weather and mountain safety guides first.
